Description
This workshop is for all ASU personnel who:
- Are required to wear any kind of respirator, OR
- Choose to (but not required to) wear any kind of respirator OTHER than a disposable dust mask.
The workshop includes both:
Lecture & hands-on activities to complete the OSHA requirement for initial/annual training; and
Respirator fit-testing to meet the OSHA requirement for initial/annual fit-testing.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
BE SURE TO COMPLETE YOUR MEDICAL EVALUATION (IF YOU REQUIRE ONE) BEFORE THE WORKSHOP. Sign up for a medical evaluation through Workshops.appstate.edu.

If you already have been assigned a respirator, bring it to the workshop. If not, DO NOT PURCHASE one before the workshop.

Objectives
- Know why and when wearing a respirator is necessary.
- Understand how improper fit, usage, or maintenance reduces the protection offered by a respirator.
- Know the limitations and capabilities of your respirator and respirators in general.
- Know how to use a respirator effectively in emergency situations such as when the respirator malfunctions.
- Demonstrate the ability to inspect, put on and remove, use, and check the seals of your respirator.
- Know how to properly maintain and store your respirator.
- Be able to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent the effective use of respirators.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the general requirements of the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard and the ASU Respiratory Protection Program.
- Demonstrate proper fit of your respirator by taking the annual fit-test.
Prerequisites
- Current Medical Approval (i.e. Respiratory Protection Medical Evaluation within the past calendar year, or prior Medical Evaluation showing no need for annual evaluation).
- IMPORTANT - You MUST be CLEAN-SHAVEN where respirator contacts face. No facial hair or stubble!
- No tobacco, eating, or drinking (other than water) during the lecture portion of the training/fit-testing.
- Bring your respirator if you already have one. Unless you already have a respirator, do NOT purchase one prior to the workshop.
