Course Description

Facilitator: Ray Miller, Hubbard Center

Session 1: Scholarly Teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: origins and current practice (September 22, 2009)
Session 2: Researching one’s teaching: methods and documentation (October 6, 2009)

This two-part workshop will explore research and assessment in teaching that ranges from scholarly teaching practice to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Participants will receive a copy of Kathleen McKinney’s book, ENHANCING LEARNING THROUGH THE SCHOLARSHIP OF TEACHING AND LEARNING. This workshop will help participants to articulate their current pedagogical practice, potential research questions regarding teaching in their discipline, and formulate potential strategies for researching those questions.

Participants must attend both sessions.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish between Ernest Boyer’s categories of scholarship.
  • Distinguish between scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
  • Explore Pat Hutchings’ “taxonomy of questions” as it relates to conducting research and assessment of one’s teaching.
  • Analyze which kinds of research methods are most appropriate for your discipline and/or the kinds of questions that you wish to ask regarding your own teaching, teaching with your colleagues or teaching in your field.
  • Identify a review of literature research and assessment as it relates to the pedagogical concerns you have for teaching in your field.
