Course Description
Facilitator: Ray Miller, Theatre and Dance and the Hubbard Center
Session 1, October 8: Moving Towards a New Model in the Relationship Between Teaching and Research
Session 2, November 12: Research Enhanced Higher Education: Going Beyond the Divide
This book group will examine the thesis put forward in Angela Brew's book, Universities Into the 21st Century: Research and Teaching—Beyond the Divide, regarding an emerging new way of viewing the relationship between teaching and research. She does not view these two areas as competitive separate areas in higher education. Rather, she makes the argument that activities inherent in each complement and enhance one another in fundamental and important ways. This group will discuss her work in light of its implications for our own individual research/teaching aspirations, its implication for our specific disciplines, and its potential impact of the wider university mission regarding undergraduate education.
Participants in this book group will receive a copy of Angela Brew’s book and must attend both sessions (October 8 and November 12).
