Facilitator: Ray Miller, Hubbard Center

This workshop is designed for those faculty who are currently participating in the 2009-2010 mentoring program offered through the Hubbard Center. Faculty will discuss mentoring as defined and presented in W. Brad Johnson’s book, On Being a Mentor: A Guide for Higher Education Faculty.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify best practices for the mentoring process as discussed in W. Brad Johnson’s book, On Being a Mentor: A Guide for Higher Education Faculty.
  • Apply some of the principles and ideas that he proposes to the mentoring process at Appalachian.
  • Contextualize the mentoring of new faculty with the mentoring of other constituencies in higher education from undergraduate and graduate students to midcareer and later career faculty.
  • Make recommendations and identify goals for developing a mentoring program and/or learning community that supports not only first- and second-year new faculty at Appalachian, but also faculty across their professional lifespans.
