Description

Meu Bi'lavd Comunidade (My Beloved Community): Musical and Cultural Exchange through Scholarship and Performance in Brazil

Hayes School of Music faculty member Keith McCutchen examines how his Creative Scholarly Activity is shaped by projects and collaborations. He will discuss his ongoing relationship with the Camerata Antiqua de Curitiba, a state sponsored choir and orchestra located in Curitiba Brazil. McCutchen is currently writing a work for Chorus, String Orchestra, and Jazz Quintet that will have its world premiere in Curitiba this fall. The Jazz Vespers utilizes historical references in that the opening text is set to melodies shaped by melodic formulas reminiscent of Gregorian chant interwoven with harmonies that fuse 20th century classical and jazz styles.

McCutchen will also discuss his week long residency at Escola De Musica Artes Do Parana, where he will lecture on composition/improvisation, conducting techniques and a survey of American 20th Century Choral Literature. McCutchen's funding for travel is sponsored by a Federal Assistance Award issued by the US Consulate in Sao Paulo Brazil.
