*** PRE-REGISTRATION BY 5 PM THE DAY BEFORE IS REQUIRED***

Any class with fewer than 2 people registered by 5 pm the day before the class WILL BE CANCELLED.

Employees may sign up directly, or Supervisors may sign up employees by emailing the employees' usernames to cavanaughmm@appstate.edu.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: New and newly-reassigned/transferred employees whose jobs may reasonably be expected to expose them to human blood.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is required if there is a reasonable chance of contacting human blood as part of your job.

This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of bloodborne pathogens, common modes of their transmission, methods of preventing transmission, and other relevant information. The course will provide all information and forms needed for eligible employees to obtain their Hepatitis B vaccines (to be paid for by their department).

Attendees who successfully complete this course will meet the requirements of:

  • OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick Prevention Standard (1910.1030).
  • The N.C. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (NCOSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen Standard; and
  • The ASU Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

Objectives

  • List the diseases which can be transmitted through bloodborne pathogens.
  • Recognize symptoms of bloodborne diseases.
  • Know the major occupational risk factors for contracting a bloodborne disease.
  • Describe how bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate proper work practices, PPE, and labeling to prevent infection with bloodborne pathogens in the workplace.
  • Know what to do if exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Know where, when, and how to obtain optional Hepatitis B vaccination.

Prerequisites

  • No pre-requisites, but online registration is required by 5 pm the day before the class.
