Description

This workshop will enable participants to learn strategies for using CLAC to achieve the QEP global learning goals and outcomes. CLAC is short for “Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum.” It is one of the QEP curricular actions (http://qep.appstate.edu/curricular-actions/cultures-and-literatures-across-curriculum-clac) Arguably, CLAC can be applied to all of the learning goals; however, this workshop will focus on three outcomes for which CLAC is particularly well suited: Goal 2 A. Apply knowledge of other cultures and countries Goal 2 B. Analyze a single issue from multiple perspectives Goal 3 A. Demonstrate a sense of global interconnections and interdependencies For this workshop, we seek participants from across the curriculum and the university, particularly in large introductory and/or general education courses. In this workshop, we will discuss various CLAC models that can be adapted to course needs and content. We will offer examples of successful CLAC activities, and we will do an activity with participants to demonstrate how such activities work in practice. We want faculty to leave the workshop with a clear idea of how CLAC can help them meet these global learning outcomes for students in their courses.

Objectives

  • 1. Identify content and thematic areas within your own courses where CLAC could be a useful strategy to achieve global learning outcomes, enhancing language and culture content.
  • 2. Locate CLAC resources and/or facilitators that can help accomplish the language and/or culture goals of your course
  • 3. Apply the knowledge and new understanding of CLAC to implement one of the several available models of CLAC to an existing or future course to accomplish or further language and/or cultural understanding.
