The Writing Across the Curriculum Program invites you to join our WAC-based book club for faculty who want to learn more about effective strategies for writing and teaching writing.

This semester we will read John C. Bean’s Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom. WAC will provide a copy of the text to book club members.

The goal of this seminal work in WAC studies is to help faculty “transform students from passive to active learners, deepening their understanding of subject matter while helping them learn how disciplinary experts ask questions, conduct inquiry, gather and analyze data, and make arguments.”

Whether you’re preparing to teach a writing intensive course in the future or have been implementing writing in your classroom for years and might just be ready for some new strategies, we invite you to join us for engaging, cross-disciplinary conversations about how we write, how we learned to write well, and how we can demystify the process of writing for students.

We will meet once a month for the fall semester. Our first gathering (in September) will be to meet and take a look at the book together to plan which sections we would like to focus on for discussion. The following three meetings will be at 12 on the first Thursday of the month (Oct, Nov, Dec). All meetings will take place in the WAC office (253 Anne Belk Hall). Tea and coffee will be provided. Faculty should feel free to bring their lunch.
