Any class that does not have at least 2 people registered by 5 pm the day before the class WILL BE CANCELLED.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: New employees and re-assigned/transferred employees who will work with or around hazardous chemicals. "Hazardous chemicals" can include solids (such as road salt), liquids, gases, welding fumes, and dusts (such asbestos, silica, and lead paint).

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is designed for employees whose jobs will require them to work with or around hazardous chemicals.

OSHA's HazCom training requirements are contained in the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).

Objectives

  • In this course, you will learn how to put into practice OSHA's requirements regarding use of hazardous chemicals, including how to:
  • Recognize the physical, health, simple asphyxiation, combustible dust, pyrophoric gas, and other hazards of chemicals in the work area.
  • Recognize operations in your work area where hazardous chemicals are present.
  • Know what engineering controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment will help you protect yourself from these hazards.
  • Locate and understand ASU's written Hazard Communication Program.
  • Locate and understand Safety Data Sheets online and/or in their dept.
  • Know how to detect the presence or release of a hazardous chemical in the work area.
  • React appropriately to a release of hazardous chemicals in the work area.
  • Know how to get additional information if needed.

Prerequisites

  • No previous courses required. However, pre-registration by 5 pm the night before the class is required. (If fewer than 2 people have registered by 5 pm the night before class, the class will be cancelled).
