This workshop is geared towards non-research/clinical staff. It reviews the information provided in both the "Initial" and the annual "Refresher" Bloodborne Pathogens workshops.
Emphasis will be placed on:
- New developments in bloodborne pathogen-related diseases
- New regulatory and/or immunization requirements
- Refreshing skills that help prevent transmission of bloodborne pathogens in the workplace, especially as related to spill cleanup.
Attendees who successfully complete this course will meet the requirements of:
- N.C. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (NCOSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen Standard
- ASU Exposure Control Plan
Objectives
- List the diseases carried by blood and other potentially infectious materials.
- Recognize symptoms of these diseases.
- Know the major occupational risk factors for contracting a bloodborne disease.
- Know where, when, and how to obtain optional Hepatitis B vaccination.
- Describe modes of transmission in the workplace.
- Demonstrate work practices, PPE, labeling and other methods to prevent infection with bloodborne pathogens in the workplace.
- Describe actions to take if exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

- None: this is a combined initial/refresher class.
