Description
Join the Office of Research and Innovation, the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies, the Office of Student Research, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Student Success on Thursday, May 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in John E. Thomas Hall room 387, for a program to support faculty who are mentoring research students at Appalachian State University.
Come work through a curriculum that offers case studies and the opportunity for discussion around mentoring students in research. Upon completion, you will receive an Entering Mentoring certificate for your personnel file, documenting six hours of mentoring training. Light lunch will be provided.
Many funding agencies require training in research mentoring and we are offering the "Entering Mentoring” program curriculum provided through the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) to supplement those requirements. The program will cover the following topics:
Introduction to Mentor Training Aligning Expectations Promoting Professional Development Maintaining Effective Communication Assessing Understanding Fostering Independence Cultivating Ethical Behavior Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy and Plan
You must attend the entire six hours between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM in person on App State’s Boone campus to participate in this program.
The content of each session is designed to address the key concerns and challenges identified by research mentors. Each topic has learning objectives and participants will have the opportunity to engage in conversations, identify a mentoring network, and build knowledge and skills in each area.
