Description

Even before the events of 2020, students have been increasingly navigating traumatic life events before and throughout their collegiate experiences. Almost half of U.S. youth will have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience by time they graduate high school. During college, students may have to navigate complex and ongoing issues includeing sexual violence, finanical insecruity, racism, homophobia, domestic violence, etc. etc. Often, our classroom environments fail to account for how these stressors impact the learner and how the learning environment can exacerbate trauma responses in our students. During this discussion, you will be introduced to the concept of psychological trauma, how it impacts the learning environment, and how you can adjust your teaching strategies and approaches to incorporate a trauma-informed lens.

Objectives

  • Define trauma and understand the impact of trauma on the learner and the learning environment.
  • Identify potential behaviors and dispositions associated with trauma responses.
  • Recall elements that define trauma-informed approaches in education.
