Description

Writing to learn refers to a set of ideas and practices regarding the way people use writing as a tool for learning (not just communicating). This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the concept of writing to learn with particular emphasis on the importance of writing-to-learn activities as tools for deepening understanding, extending learning, and developing critical thinking skills across all disciplines.

Objectives

  • Identify the basic concepts of writing-to-learn pedagogy
  • Apply writing to learn concepts to discipline- or course-specific teaching & learning challenges
  • Revise an assignment to include a writing-to-learn component that addresses an identified challenge
  • Develop an assessment strategy for new writing to learn component
