Description

Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) provide students with the opportunity to both engage in hands-on research and develop career-related, transferable skills (ex. teamwork). These classes also help to increase retention in STEAM fields and improve equitable access to research opportunities. Developing thoughtfully designed CUREs requires identifying: 1) a research question that can be translated to an undergraduate classroom, 2) the skills that students will engage in, and 3) methods to report their findings to the broader scientific community (ex. publications). This workshop will focus on describing CUREs and how to implement them along with identifying topics for potential CUREs based on the participants' backgrounds.

Objectives

  • Categorize benefits of CUREs for both students and instructors
  • Assess personal research area and identify what components could be incorporated into a CURE
  • Describe factors that define CUREs and identify steps needed to implement them
  • Compare Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) with traditional teaching strategies
