Description

Communicating STEM, with a focus on Climate Literacy

With the QEP implementation rapidly approaching, we hope to build ideas for helping to connect with students in an engaging way, offer respect to different views, and enhance our own capacity for communicating controversial ideas and scientific information in our ever-challenging and rapidly changing world. We will make use of a variety of interactive and improvisational exercises, discussions, texts/artifacts, and role-playing. We aim to create an experimental, collaborative, and creative environment where we can practice getting out of our comfort zones together. Think of this as a combination of a Second City improv group and a NASA conference, co-led by a mathematician who studies climate science policy and an ethnographer of compassionate communication who works with trauma survivors.

This will be a series of three 2-hour workshops that will each have a slightly different focus and move toward more realistic applications. Each session will also have a small bit of reading to prepare for the discussions. Participants can expect to both learn and share since we will be leveraging the collective experiences and expertise of the group.
